California Learning System
As we prepare for the California exam, we are finding a number of errors in the California SHRM Learning System. The most obvious one is that it still states that minimum wage is $7.50 in California. Please feel free to post errors that you find. We will then send them to HRCI and hopefully they will update the books for the next round of HR practitioners preparing for the California exam.
I believe you have an outdated version of the materials. I just checked this information in the 2009 version and it is correct.
If you find other errors, I would be more than happy to include them in the product update which currently happens annually. We also have a update page where I could post this information after validation. I appreciate your willingness to paraticipate in our effort of continuous improvement of the product.

In the Employee and Labor Relations book, on page 85, the paragraph on HIPP…it gives a web address where the HIPP notice can be downloaded.Unfortunately, the link doesn’t work. I tried finding that form number on that website, and couldn’t. I did find the form on a different website (so I have it and can start handing it out). I just wanted to let you know the website isn’t right and needs to be corrected.

I have a question on the new legislation mentioned in page 60, under "Review of the Injury and Illness Prevention Program" of the "Leave of Absence & Workers' Comp" module that we went over today. It states that "the new legislation now requires workers' compensation insurers to review the employer's IIPP within four months of the commencement of the policy term." It has a reference for California Labor Code 6401.7(k)(1). However, California Labor Code 6401.7(l) suggests that this is applicable only to those employers with experience modification rate of 2.0 or greater (that's pretty high) within six (not four) months of the policy term. Do you know if this "four months" is simply a typo or if there are other sources that makes this statement in the text book correct?
(I'm sure that we don't need to know four months or six months for the Test. I would like to know if there is another source for this sentence in the text book, because I work in Manufacturing Industry where IIPP effectiveness is very important.)

Page 28 of the Compensation and Benefits Module explains Split-Shift Pay using $7.50 an hour as minimum wage. I am certain that any HR practitioner living in California knows the minimum wage is $8.00 per hour - just want to make sure there is no confusion on that.

Well, we did it. We finished our first California Study Group webinar using the California SHRM Learning System. I still think it is the best study guide available for the California exam and will continue to use it as my study guide of choice! Good luck on the exam everyone!

Hey, I just wanted to point out something that needs to be corrected for the next edition of our workbooks. In the Employee and Labor Relations book, page #63, the last sentence of the last paragraph is a duplicate of the sentence immediately preceding it. "It does not prohibit an employer...." So, its not wrong - its just repeating itself.

The questions that I found to be incorrect are in the Health and Safety book. Question 1: The answer code is wrong. Answer should be B - reference page 10. Q 32 should be C - reference pages 22 & 23. Q 42 - I would say should be D based on page 36. Common sense is that all information should be gathered first...but based on the way the book phrases it, I would say D is the correct answer.
